Years
2007 - 2020
Electronic fuel injection replaced the carburettor in 2007, making starting and emissions behaviour more consistent. Standard, Low, Custom, R and Iron trims share the 883 base, but seat, tank and brakes vary.
Years
2004 - 2006
The redesigned Sportster chassis rubber-mounts the 883 and greatly improves comfort while still using a carburettor. Its wider frame and higher wet weight distinguish it from pre-2004 bikes.
Years
1991 - 2003
From 1991 the 883 gained a five-speed gearbox while retaining its rigid-mounted Evolution engine. Vibration is characteristic of this generation; 2004 marks the clear move to the wider rubber-mounted chassis.
Years
1986 - 1990
The first 883 Evolution has a rigid-mounted engine and four-speed gearbox in the classic Sportster frame. It is a simple, vibration-heavy classic that differs materially from five-speed models introduced for 1991.
The Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 (XL 883) has been the entry-level Sportster since 1986. Under the tank sits the air-cooled Evolution 883 V-twin with five-speed gearbox (from 1991), chain primary drive and final belt drive. Over the years variants have included the XL 883 Standard, XL 883L Low, XL 883N Iron, XL 883C Custom and XL 883R Roadster. The 883 was discontinued in Europe in 2020 because of Euro 5; its successor is the Sportster S with the Revolution Max engine.
The Sportster 883 targets new cruiser riders and custom builders. The low seat (around 695 mm, or 660 mm on the Low/Iron) and manageable 250 kg kerb weight make it approachable. It is not at home on the motorway or on long tours, small fuel tank, firm seat and pronounced vibration set a natural limit. Direct competition came from the Honda Shadow 750 and the Triumph Bonneville. On the used market the Sportster 883 is the cheapest way into the Harley world and is popular as a starting point for bobber and cafe racer builds.
A used Harley Davidson Sportster 883 costs €6,250 on average. Most cost €4,790 to €9,000. This is based on 70 motorcycles for sale now.
