About the Harley Davidson Softail Standard
The Harley-Davidson Softail Standard is a minimalist cruiser reintroduced in 2020 as the entry point to the Softail family. It is powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-twin (1745cc), a more modern and efficient engine than the Twin Cam it replaced. The hidden rear suspension (Softail principle) gives the bike the look of a hardtail while delivering comfort comparable to a conventional twin-shock setup. The Softail Standard is intended as an affordable, no-frills entry model without premium trim or accessories.
The Softail Standard targets riders who want the classic Harley-Davidson experience without the price premiums of models like the Heritage or Fat Boy. Its lower seat height and relatively lower weight (by Harley standards) make the Standard accessible for riders stepping up from smaller bikes. It competes with the Indian Scout and Triumph Bonneville Bobber. The dealer ecosystem for Softail accessories is enormous.

What to check before buying
- Check primary chain tension and wear; the Milwaukee-Eight uses a dry clutch and primary chain requiring periodic adjustment.
- Inspect the Showa front fork for leaking stanchions; the Standard's stock fork has limited adjustability.
- Check the exhaust for heat discolouration and cracking at joints; a known issue on hard-ridden examples.
- Check battery condition on low-mileage examples; Harleys are known for battery drain during extended storage periods.
