About this model
About the Harley Davidson Heritage Softail
The Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail (FLST/FLSTC) is the same family that adverts also call the Heritage Classic. It debuted in 1986 as the FLST and quickly gained the Classic trim with twin saddle, valanced wheels and fork-mounted bullet headlight. Under the tank is an air-cooled Big Twin: Evolution until 1999, then Twin Cam 88B/96B/103B with balance shafts, and from 2018 replaced by the Heritage Classic FLHC with the Milwaukee-Eight 107 or 114. The Softail chassis hides the rear suspension behind the engine.
The Heritage Softail targets the touring rider who wants classic looks without compromising on longer rides. Standard saddlebags, fork-mounted screen and a larger tank (18-19 litres on recent versions) make it more usable than a Fat Boy or Slim. At around 320 kg curb and a low seat (roughly 680 mm) it is manageable but heavy. Direct rivals are the Indian Vintage and Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster. Listings often use 'Heritage Softail' interchangeably with 'Heritage Softail Classic'; always verify VIN and year for trim differences.

Before you buy
What to check before buying
- On Twin Cam Heritage Softails (1999-2017) inspect cam chain tensioner shoes and INA cam bearings; known wear items beyond 60,000 km.
- Cylinder base gaskets often weep oil; a light film at the bottom of the engine is a warning.
- On Milwaukee-Eight Heritage (2018+) listen for balance-shaft chain rattle and ask for the ATS tensioner history.
- The fork is undersized for the bike's weight; check fork seals and steering head bearings for play or stiction.
- Demand a service book: Heritage models need primary oil swaps every 8,000 km, often skipped by private owners.
