The source family ‘BMW R 850’ is not one motorcycle: adverts include the R850R roadster and R850RT tourer. Both use the 848cc Oilhead boxer, shaft drive, Telelever and Paralever, but the RT is fully faired, heavier and intended for weather-protected long-distance use. The versions are therefore connected to an edition only with an explicit R850R or R850RT model name; an unclear ‘R850’ advert remains unresolved.
The R850R is an approachable upright boxer for daily use and relaxed tours. The RT makes more sense for riders who genuinely cover long motorway distances with luggage. Neither is A2 compliant in standard form. On either, inspect maintenance of the final drive, gearbox and brakes and test any ABS system; condition of these age-sensitive parts affects value far more than an accessory package.
