R 850 RT (1995-2001)

About the Bmw R 850 RT
The BMW R 850 RT is a fully-faired tourer powered by an 848 cc air- and oil-cooled flat-twin boxer engine. Introduced in 1995 and produced through 2001, it served as the entry-level RT alongside the larger R 1100 RT. Typical BMW components are all present: Telelever front suspension, Paralever rear drive with shaft drive, ABS as an option or standard depending on the model year, and a comprehensive wind-protection fairing. With 70 hp and a broad power band it is comfortable over long distances without the riding intensity of sport tourers.
The R 850 RT targets riders who want a solid, affordable tourer with BMW quality and classic boxer character. The 282 kg and roughly 790 mm seat height require some riding experience, but the ergonomics are excellent for long-distance work. Against the Honda ST 1100 and Yamaha FJR 1300 of that era it offers unique dynamics from the low-slung boxer. On the used market it is affordable and well-supported through the BMW dealer network and independent specialists.

What to check before buying
- Check the Telelever front suspension for worn rubber bushings and ball joints; these are frequently skipped in maintenance schedules.
- Inspect the ABS module for fault codes; the older BMW ABS generation can develop faults that are expensive to resolve.
- Examine fairing mounting points and panels for cracks; the complex fairing has many attachment points that become brittle with age.
- Check for oil weeping at the cylinder head gaskets and rocker covers; the air- and oil-cooled engine needs regular sealing attention.
- Check the battery voltage and starting system; the electrical load of the full touring spec drains a weak battery quickly.
