R 75
GenerationThe 1941–1944 BMW R 75 is the heavy military 745 cc boxer with shaft drive and sidecar orientation. Check engine numbers, documentation and restoration quality, plus final drive, forks, brakes, engine and electrics; authenticity matters more than cosmetic condition alone.
About the Bmw R 75
The BMW R 75 is an air-cooled 750 cc flat-twin produced by BMW from 1941 to 1944 for the Wehrmacht. The motorcycle came paired with a driven sidecar, giving the combination traction on rough terrain during North African and Eastern Front operations. With 26 hp and a hand-operated gearbox, the R 75 provided reliable performance in demanding military conditions.
The R 75 appeals exclusively to military vehicle collectors and historians. Road use is technically possible but the machine was never designed for civilian riding. Surviving examples are rare and typically museum-grade. Its closest contemporary rival is the Zündapp KS 750, also a German military sidecar combination.

What to check before buying
- Check the sidecar drive for wear; the coupling and differential are complex and genuine spare parts are virtually unobtainable.
- Inspect the frame for weld cracks and rust; these machines endured heavy military use and have often been repaired over the decades.
- Check the carburetors for aging components; original Graetzin float needles are no longer manufactured.
- Inspect the magneto ignition for condition; failed ignition components are difficult to replace with genuine parts.
- Verify authenticity of parts; many surviving examples have been rebuilt over the decades using non-original components.
