Years2015–2018
The all-new R 1200 R gained the air-liquid-cooled boxer, a steel bridge frame and a conventional upside-down fork instead of Telelever. With 92 kW and 125 Nm, it is the most powerful R 1200 R and is easily identified by its compact radiator and modern cockpit.

Years2011–2014
The update received DOHC cylinder heads and a higher rev range. The R 1200 R Classic is mechanically the same, but recognisable by wire wheels and classic paint and chrome details; it is a trim, not another model family.

Years2006–2010
The first R 1200 R replaced the R 1150 R with an air-cooled 1,170cc boxer, Telelever front suspension and shaft drive. It is the classic oil-air-cooled roadster; ABS, ESA and ASC depended on specification.

The BMW R 1200 R is a naked roadster powered by a 1170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin that BMW produced from 2006 to 2018. With 109 hp and a 208 kg kerb weight it delivers a compelling balance between performance and manageability. The typical BMW characteristics, Telelever front suspension, Paralever rear suspension and shaft drive, give it a long-distance comfortable riding position suited to both urban commuting and longer journeys. In 2015 the engine received the same specification as the updated LC series with improved ShiftCam valve timing.
The R 1200 R targets riders seeking a mature, all-round motorcycle without superbike pretension. The handling is predictable and forgiving while still offering sufficient power for motorway riding. Compared with the Triumph Speed Triple or Ducati Monster 1200 it is less sport-focused but offers more everyday usability and impressive reliability.
Check the valve clearances at purchase; the air/oil-cooled engine requires regular valve adjustment every 10,000 km.
Inspect the Telelever front suspension for oil leaks and worn bearings; a rebuild is costly but necessary at high mileage.
Check the shaft drive for correct oil level and leaks at the final drive unit.
Look for oil seepage at the engine block, particularly around the cylinder head bolts; a known point on early generation models.
Check the electrical system for oxidised connectors; examples above 80,000 km can develop issues with CAN-bus connections.
