The BMW R 1200 RT was BMW's twin-cylinder tourer from 2005 to 2018, powered by the air-cooled (later partially liquid-cooled) 1,170 cc boxer making 110-125 hp through a shaft drive and Telelever/Paralever chassis. Standard equipment includes a full fairing with electric screen, pannier mounts, ESA suspension, ABS Pro, ASC and a central infotainment display. The 2014 LC update added a wet-head DOHC engine with more torque and ride modes.
The RT targets touring riders who want a complete two-up package without the heft of the K 1600 six. Wet weight is around 274 kg with an adjustable 805-820 mm seat, keeping it relatively manageable for a full-fairing tourer; the low boxer cylinders give it nimble steering for its mass. Rivals are the Honda NT1100, Yamaha FJR1300 and the Triumph Trophy. On the Dutch used market plenty of ex-police RTs are offered; pay extra attention to service history and high mileages.
