About the Bmw K 100
The BMW K 100 introduced the liquid-cooled, horizontally mounted 987 cc four-cylinder known as the ‘Flying Brick’ in 1983. Fuel injection, shaft drive and a load-bearing engine made it radically different from BMW's boxers. The base K 100 was naked; RS, RT and LT added progressively more weather protection and touring equipment. All share 90 hp and the characteristic engine, while weight and ergonomics differ greatly.
A K 100 suits enthusiasts of robust 1980s engineering who can assess maintenance properly. The engine can cover very high mileages if cooling, splines and injection are cared for. RS is sportier, while RT and LT are true tourers. Modern tyres and correctly set suspension improve handling, but brakes, mass and heat management remain products of their era.

What to check before buying
- Inspect the fuel tank internally for corrosion and test the pump, hoses and injectors because long storage damages the fuel system.
- Require evidence of clutch and shaft-spline lubrication and check for play or clunks during load changes.
- Run the engine until the cooling fan operates because seized fan motors can cause overheating in traffic.
- Check instruments, connectors and every warning lamp for failures caused by moisture or oxidised contacts.
- On ABS versions, the pump and warning sequence must work correctly because early ABS parts are expensive.
