About the Honda XL 350
The Honda XL 350 is a classic 1970s four-stroke trail motorcycle built around an air-cooled 348 cc single and five-speed transmission. It combines a simple, torque-rich engine with long suspension travel and relatively low mass. It feels more natural on relaxed country roads and gentle trails than on motorways. Early and later versions differ in tank, exhaust, ignition and trim, making build year and originality important.
Check frame and engine numbers, registration status and whether lights, instruments, exhaust and mudguards match the stated year. Start it completely cold and listen to cam chain, valves and big-end, checking blue smoke, compression and oil leakage. Ask about oil intervals, valve clearances, ignition and carburettor rebuilding. Inspect tank and frame for corrosion, exhaust and cases for impacts, and steering head, swingarm and wheels for play. Drum brakes and suspension are modest by modern standards. Original plastics and exhaust parts are scarce, so a complete motorcycle is often the better purchase.
