The BMW F 900 R is a middleweight naked unveiled in 2019 and launched in 2020. It uses an 895 cc parallel twin with a 270/450-degree crank, the same architecture as the F 900 XR and F 850 GS. Around 105 hp and 92 Nm of torque give it a strong midrange rather than a peaky top end, and a steel bridge frame using the engine as a stressed member keeps kerb weight near 211 kg. ABS, two ride modes and LED lighting are standard; full-LED, a TFT dash and cornering ABS Pro are optional.
The F 900 R targets riders stepping up from a 650 or buying their first BMW without committing to an S 1000 R. The seat height is offered in 815 and 770 mm versions, which suits shorter riders and city use. Competitors include the Yamaha MT-09, Triumph Trident 660, Kawasaki Z900 and Suzuki GSX-8S. It is not a stoplight champion, but a calm sport-naked with BMW equipment levels and a broad dealer network.
Check for vibrations through bars and pegs around 4000-5000 rpm; some owners report they never disappear.
Inspect exhaust silencer finish, frame paint and fasteners for corrosion, particularly on winter-ridden bikes.
Confirm completion of 2020-2021 recalls covering the side-stand switch and a brake hose batch.
Cycle through all ride modes and the TFT dash to check for glitches; firmware updates require a dealer visit.
Inspect the chain and sprockets; without regular lubrication the chain wears the rear sprocket and gearbox output prematurely.
