The Yamaha XVS 650 DragStar is a V-twin custom cruiser powered by a 649 cc V-twin with carburettors. With a low centre of gravity, low seat height and characterful custom design, the XVS 650 is a popular entry-level cruiser. The riding character is relaxed and accessible: torque is present at low rpm and the riding position is comfortable throughout. The bike was produced from 1997 to around 2012 and was for many years one of the best-selling cruisers in Europe, partly thanks to its low seat height of around 690 mm.
The XVS 650 is ideal for new riders stepping into the cruiser category, and for experienced riders seeking an urban bike with classic V-twin character. The bike is easy to ride and maintain. Rivals include the Honda VT750 Shadow and the Kawasaki VN800 Vulcan. The XVS 650 Classic variant adds more ornate styling with extra chrome details. The relatively modest 39 hp output is a deliberate choice for some riders in the context of the A2 licence category.
Check the carburettors for correct tuning and needle condition; erratic idling is a common concern.
Inspect the front forks for oil leaks and worn seals; limited travel is a design characteristic but poorly maintained springs give unstable handling.
Check the battery and charging system for age-related issues; seasonal use by cruiser riders shortens battery life.
Check chrome details for rust and paint damage; cosmetic upkeep is labour-intensive on older examples.
Check the cam chain for wear; rattling on start-up indicates a worn chain.
