Years
2022 - present
890 cc generation (2022–present)
GenerationFrom 2022 the XSR900 gained the 890 cc CP3, a longer Deltabox frame and modern IMU electronics. It steers more precisely, makes more torque and has a lower seat than the original.
Years
2016 - 2021
847 cc generation (2016–2021)
GenerationThe first XSR900 uses the 847 cc CP3 engine and MT-09 hardware in a retro roadster. Its taller seat and rounder tank distinguish it from the 2022-on generation.
About the Yamaha XSR 900
The Yamaha XSR-900 is a retro naked produced since 2016. Beneath the classic aluminium tank cover sits the same 890 cc CP3 triple as in the MT-09 (from 2022; previously 847 cc), making 119 hp with standard quickshifter, three riding modes and traction control. Kerb weight is roughly 193 kg with the seat at 810 mm. The 2022 update brought Speed Block-inspired livery and a richer electronics suite with a six-axis IMU.
The XSR-900 targets riders who want modern MT-09 tech wrapped in a classic silhouette. It is well suited to commuting, weekend rides and, with an aftermarket screen and luggage, short tours. Direct rivals are the Kawasaki Z900RS, Triumph Speed Twin 1200, Ducati Scrambler 1100 and BMW R nineT; the Yamaha stands out with its triple-cylinder soundtrack, the most modern electronics in the retro class and competitive new pricing.

What to check before buying
- Inspect the retro tank for dings and stone chips; the XSR-900 uses an aluminium tank that handles dents less gracefully than plastic.
- Ask whether the throttle-response update has been applied on early bikes (2016-2017); the A-mode was snatchy.
- Check chain stretch; the triple loads torque mid-range and wears the set faster than a four-cylinder.
- Inspect the retro seat mount; drops can break plastic parts around the seat lock.
- Test all 2022+ electronics (cruise, IMU modes); a sensor fault can disable multiple systems at once.
