GenerationThe TZ500G–J is Yamaha's rare 497cc two-stroke four-cylinder production racer for the 500cc class. It is circuit machinery, not a road model or YZR factory machine.
About the Yamaha TZ 500
The Yamaha TZ500 is a rare 500cc production racer for private riders, built from 1980 through 1982 for circuit use. It has a liquid-cooled two-stroke four-cylinder and no road-oriented TZR equipment. The TZ500 is neither a YZR factory machine nor a TZR road bike; authenticity, race history and correct specification are decisive.
Treat purchase or restoration as a race project. Check engine and frame numbers, crankshaft, cylinders, ignition, carburettors and every race-specific chassis component. Do not use it on public roads without separate legal and technical assessment. A complete documented example is far more valuable than a partly modified machine of unknown provenance.

What to check before buying
- Verify TZ500G/H/J model year, frame and engine numbers; do not confuse it with a YZR500 or road model.
- Measure compression and inspect crankshaft, cylinders and pistons for wear or seizure damage.
- Check carburettors, jets, intake and ignition for correct race specification and fuel supply.
- Inspect frame, swingarm, brakes, wheels and suspension for cracks, corrosion and old circuit damage.
- Check provenance, parts list and documentation; missing TZ500 parts are specialist and expensive.
