Years
1991 - 2004
The 1991 3YL introduced the V-twin derivative of Yamaha's YZR250 technology and is the version represented by the available 1991 advert. These late TZs are pure GP customer racers with dry clutch and premix lubrication; buy only with clear rebuild history and appropriate spare parts.
Years
1981 - 1990
From 1981 the TZ 250 received a thoroughly revised racing engine and chassis; individual cylinders, intake control and cycle parts evolved rapidly in this period. Identify these machines by type code and model year rather than colour scheme or fairing alone.
Years
1973 - 1980
The first TZ 250 replaced the TD-3 with a liquid-cooled 247cc inline twin and six-speed gearbox. It is the classic customer racer for privateers; its mechanical simplicity is historically appealing, but correct original cylinders and ignition are essential.
The Yamaha TZ 250 is not a road-going TZR but a customer racer: a 250cc two-stroke supplied by Yamaha to private road racers from 1973. The first TZ used a liquid-cooled inline twin and six-speed gearbox; later machines adopted increasingly race-focused cylinders and chassis, eventually moving to the V-twin layout used by the 1991 3YL. Registration, lighting and a conventional road-bike service schedule are not part of the package.
A TZ 250 is a specialist purchase for circuit, demonstration or classic-racing use. Its value lies in the correct engine code, complete original parts, a logbook and documented crankshaft, cylinder and gearbox work. A bike described only as 'race ready' without hours or invoices deserves a full technical inspection budget. Use it in the appropriate race class and have engine work carried out by a two-stroke specialist.
