The RD 400 is the late-1970s air-cooled 398cc twin. Buy on a healthy crankshaft and original oil system rather than appearance alone.
The Yamaha RD 400 is a 398cc air-cooled two-stroke twin from the latter half of the 1970s. It is the larger, more powerful development of the early RD family, combining strong middleweight performance with classic hardware: twin carburettors, Autolube lubrication, spoked wheels and simple brake and suspension components. The engine responds eagerly when ignition and carburation are right, but it rewards an owner who understands maintenance.
At purchase, prioritise crankshaft, cylinders, oil supply and corrosion over cosmetics. Confirm the frame is straight, brakes and suspension work properly, and the exhausts have not rusted through. A complete RD 400 with correct numbers and original parts is usually a better base than a pretty bike with an unknown rebuild history.
