1973–1975 RD 200
GenerationThe RD 200 is the compact air-cooled 200cc twin in the RD family. Look for an even-running engine and a complete original oil-injection system.
About the Yamaha RD 200
The Yamaha RD 200 is a light air-cooled two-stroke twin from the mid-1970s. At about 195cc and low weight it is less intimidating than larger RD models, but it needs the same attention to oiling, carburation and crankshaft health. Its compact proportions make it a pleasant classic Sunday bike or an accessible entry into Japanese two-stroke ownership.
Do not buy a good RD 200 on appearance alone. First confirm that both cylinders run evenly, that the exhausts and tank are sound inside, and that charging and ignition are dependable. Original parts are worth more than a quick cosmetic restoration; on a test ride it should pick up cleanly without excess smoke, detonation or a hanging idle.

What to check before buying
- Check crank seals and bearings for a hanging idle, air leaks or metallic noise.
- Check the oil-injection pump, hoses and cable control; incorrect adjustment can damage the engine.
- Inspect tank, carburettors and fuel tap for rust and contamination.
- Check charging voltage, points ignition and connectors; old wiring often causes intermittent faults.
