About the Yamaha MT 125
The Yamaha MT-125 is the naked entry-level model of the MT line and has been built since 2014. The 125 cc four-stroke single with variable valve timing makes around 15 hp, qualifying it for the European A1 licence (16+). Kerb weight is roughly 142 kg with the seat at 810 mm. The 2020 update brought a comprehensive facelift with sharper LED lighting, a new TFT display and styling that visually links the bike to the larger MT models.
The MT-125 targets young riders looking for their first motorcycle and A1-licence holders who don't want a 50 cc scooter. It is well suited to urban commuting, short rides and as a riding-school training bike. Direct rivals are the Honda CB125R, KTM 125 Duke, Kawasaki Z125 and Aprilia RS125; the Yamaha stands out with styling that echoes its bigger siblings and relatively low weight.

What to check before buying
- Inspect the bike thoroughly for drop damage; A1 bikes are ridden by beginners and fall more often than larger machines.
- Check the standard suspension; under full load or with a riding-school history, the slim 41 mm fork legs wear quickly.
- Test all electronics (TFT, dashboard, ABS) on the test ride; the wiring on the narrow chassis is corrosion-sensitive.
- Ask whether the 100/80-17 front tyre still has tread; on training-school examples it wears faster than on a normally used bike.
- Inspect chain stretch and sprocket hooking; the 428-pitch chain needs frequent maintenance.
