About the Yamaha Booster
The Yamaha Booster is a 50 cc sports scooter sold in Europe under both the Yamaha Booster and MBK Booster names. Its air-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine with automatic variator makes for a lightweight, nimble city runabout on 10-inch wheels. Yamaha introduced the model in 1994 and it became one of Europe's best-selling mopeds, especially popular with younger urban riders. Later variants grew to 100 cc and 125 cc four-stroke versions (the BWS range).
The Booster is the ultimate entry-level scooter: accessible with a moped (AM) licence, weighing around 75 kg and easy to park. It is at home in city traffic and a classic first vehicle for students. Main rivals are the Peugeot Speedfight and Piaggio Zip. Thanks to its huge sales volumes, the used market is large and parts are widely available.

What to check before buying
- Check the variator belt and rollers for wear; neglected examples show noticeably reduced top speed.
- Inspect the carburettor for blocked jets and degraded diaphragms; two-stroke engines that sit unused are particularly prone to carb issues.
- Check cylinder head and exhaust port for carbon build-up from oil mix; typical on two-strokes run on cheap oil.
- Ask about brake condition: the rear drum wears slowly but the front brake (disc on later models) needs regular inspection.
- Inspect plastic bodywork for hairline cracks and rattle-can respray; Boosters are heavily customised and original panels are rare on older examples.
