2014-2018 1700 Commander
GenerationThe Thunderbird Commander is the 1,700cc belt-drive cruiser with a low seat, ABS and traction control. A 2018 example with screen, floorboards or comfort seat remains this same generation; focus on belt, brake and service condition.
About the Triumph Thunderbird Commander
The Triumph Thunderbird Commander is the touring-oriented version of the 1,700cc Thunderbird cruiser. Its liquid-cooled parallel twin with 270-degree firing interval produces strong low-rev torque and drives the rear wheel through a belt. The Commander combines a low seat, wide bars and floorboards with ABS, traction control and a 22-litre tank. It is designed for relaxed longer rides rather than light city work.
A Commander suits a rider who wants the character of a large twin while appreciating modern injection and belt drive. Its substantial ready-to-ride weight needs care when manoeuvring and parking. On a used motorcycle, inspect the belt, pulleys, rear suspension, brakes and the condition of chrome and wiring. A screen, comfort seat or crash bars are useful accessories but do not create a different technical generation.

What to check before buying
- Check belt and pulleys for stone damage, fraying, damaged teeth or incorrect tension.
- Inspect brake discs, ABS sensors and brake fluid; the high weight loads brakes and tyres considerably.
- Check rear suspension and steering-head bearings for play or leaks, especially on bikes used with passenger or luggage.
- Test cold starting, idle and throttle response, and check for fuel-injection or traction-control faults.
- Inspect chrome, wiring, battery terminals and connectors for corrosion, especially on bikes stored outdoors.
