1946–1962 Manx 500
GenerationThe 500cc Manx is the larger customer racer. Match it only with an explicit 500cc or 40M reference; power figures vary too much by build and race specification to force here.
Years

1946–1962 Manx 350
GenerationThe 350cc Manx is the smaller customer racer. Match it only with an explicit 350cc or 30M reference; year alone is insufficient because 350 and 500 ran alongside each other.
About the Norton Manx
The Norton Manx is Norton’s customer single-cylinder racer, built for road racing from 1946 to 1962. It belongs to the Manx racing family with overhead camshafts and was supplied in 350 or 500cc form. From 1950, the Featherbed racing frame became its defining basis. A Manx is not an ordinary classic road bike: many machines were later built, modified or assembled from racing parts.
For a buyer, provenance, frame and engine numbers and a credible race/restoration history matter more than a power claim. Verify that capacity, frame, gearbox and brakes belong together and have a specialist assess the machine. The Manx is intended for historic racing, demonstrations and collectors; reliability depends heavily on build quality, lubrication and careful warm-up.

What to check before buying
- Check frame and engine numbers against reliable Manx documentation; many machines are composites.
- Inspect cam drive, valve train and oil system for wear and documented specialist maintenance.
- Check cylinder, crankshaft and crankcases for race use, cracks and incorrect parts combinations.
- Inspect Featherbed frame, fork, wheels and drum brakes for cracks, play and correct race fixings.
- Verify provenance, racing history and parts invoices before paying an ‘original’ Manx premium.
