About the Norton Commando
The Norton Commando is one of the most celebrated British motorcycles ever built. Produced from 1969 to 1977 with a 745 cc (later 828 cc) air-cooled parallel-twin, it introduced the Isolastic rubber-mounted engine frame that isolated vibration from the rider. The Commando won five consecutive Motor Cycle News Machine of the Year Awards (1968–1972) and is considered the peak of classic British motorcycle design. Norton revived the name between 2010 and 2015 with the modern 961 Commando.
The Commando is aimed at riders who consciously choose British character and classic aesthetics. It is not a beginner's bike: maintenance demands are high and experience with classic motorcycles is essential. On the road, the twin delivers a characteristically low, thudding feel. Contemporary rivals were the Triumph Bonneville and BSA A65. Today a Commando is bought as a collector's piece or for occasional classic riding.
