MZ (Motorradwerk Zschopau) is a German motorcycle brand from Zschopau in Saxony, founded as a state enterprise in 1950 in the former East Germany. The brand built on the DKW tradition and grew into one of the most recognisable East German marques. MZ was known for robust, economical two-stroke motorcycles, the ETZ series was a staple for millions of travellers behind the Iron Curtain. After German reunification the company was privatised and renamed MuZ; subsequent ownership changes followed. Signature models include the MZ ES, ETZ, and the four-stroke Scorpion series of the 1990s.
In the Dutch used-motorcycle market, MZs are mainly classics, popular with enthusiasts of Eastern European heritage and vintage machines. The ETZ is inexpensive to maintain but requires specialist knowledge. The four-stroke models (Mastiff, Baghira, Skorpion) surface as affordable alternatives. Dealer and parts coverage is limited; clubs and online communities are the go-to sources. MZ sits alongside Jawa as a characterful option in the classic segment.
