The VN500 combines a 498 cc liquid-cooled V-twin with shaft drive and a low cruiser seat. It is an approachable custom for relaxed rides when cooling and carburettor servicing are up to date.
The Kawasaki VN500 Vulcan is a compact cruiser with a 498 cc liquid-cooled V-twin, shaft drive and a very low seat. It was built for many years, making it a familiar choice for riders who want big-custom looks without the mass and output of an 800 or 1500 cc machine. The engine makes calm, useful torque and shaft drive reduces routine maintenance. Its low seat inspires confidence, although the foot position can feel cramped for taller riders and its mass still needs care at walking pace.
A VN500 suits a new or returning rider who mainly enjoys relaxed solo riding. It is less suited to fast two-up motorway work than a modern middleweight, but remains friendly and dependable when maintained correctly. On a used bike, inspect the cooling system, shaft oil, carburettors and brakes. Also watch for rust on wire wheels, exhaust and frame. An original motorcycle with good service invoices is preferable to a heavily customised Vulcan with an unknown history.
