Years
2022 - present
The KLR 650 from 2022 returned with a 652 cc fuel-injected single, revised geometry and ABS versions. It is heavier and clearly more travel-oriented than the old carburetted KLR, with better cold starting and altitude compensation. Confirm ABS and exact trim per motorcycle; market versions do not all have identical equipment.
Years
2008 - 2018
The 2008–2018 KLR 650 is the redesign with more road comfort, bodywork and mass, while still using a 651 cc carburetted single. It is better suited to travel and tarmac mileage than the first generation, without being a modern fuel-injected KLR. Check carefully that a 2008–2018 advert is not an earlier motorcycle with later registration.
Years
1987 - 2007
The first KLR 650 is the carburetted dual-sport with 651 cc single, long travel and relatively low mass. It is the simplest generation for owner maintenance, but age, cooling and balancer-chain-tensioner history matter greatly. It is not a fuel-injection or ABS model.
The Kawasaki KLR 650 is the robust single-cylinder dual-sport family that should always be bought by generation. The first KLR650 ran from 1987 to 2007 with a carburettor; a heavier, more road-oriented redesign arrived in 2008 and remained through 2018; from 2022 the KLR returned with a 652 cc fuel-injected engine and ABS options. Under one name, fuel system, mass, chassis and usability differ materially.
The KLR is for riders wanting a simple adventure/dual-sport for tarmac, rough roads and travel luggage, not hard enduro work. Check frame, subframe, cooling and balancer-chain-tensioner history on carburetted models, and the complete fuel/ABS system on the modern generation. Tall seat and long travel help outside town, but the mass of later generations needs realistic expectations off road and when manoeuvring.
