The Jawa 500 is a Czechoslovak classic produced across several generations, with the best-known variant being the Jawa 500 OHC (type 15) built from 1952 to 1958. The engine is a single-cylinder OHC four-stroke of approximately 488cc, remarkably advanced for its era with an overhead camshaft and a stylish aluminium engine block. OHV predecessors date back to 1929. The 500 was used for both road riding and light competition.
Today the Jawa 500 appeals almost exclusively to classic motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors. Well-restored examples are rare and appreciating in value. Riding one requires familiarity with classic technology and some mechanical aptitude. Parts are available through Czech specialists and classic clubs. Comparable in era and character to the AJS 500 and early BMW R5.
