About the Honda CR 500
The Honda CR500R is a legendary 2-stroke motocross machine powered by a 491 cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine, produced from 1984 to 2001. The CR500 is widely regarded as one of the most brutal and powerful two-strokes ever put into production: the engine delivers around 70 hp from a machine weighing just 113 kg. Power arrives explosively in the upper rev range, earning the bike a reputation as one of the most fearsome motocrossers ever built. Major technical updates were introduced in 1984 and 1992.
The CR500R is absolutely not for beginners. The explosive power delivery and lack of traction control demand experienced riders with full command of motocross technique. The bike is used on closed circuits and motocross tracks; it is not road-legal. Rivals were the Yamaha YZ490 and KTM 500 EXC.

What to check before buying
- Check piston and cylinder bore wear; on a two-stroke of this power output, the cylinder needs replacement after around 30-40 hours of riding.
- Inspect the reed valve for cracks or deformation; a damaged reed valve causes power loss and can lead to engine damage.
- Check the magneto housing for oil seals; crankshaft bearings wear under intensive use and are a known maintenance item.
- Inspect the expansion chamber exhaust for rust and deformation; high operating temperatures cause deterioration on older examples.
