Years
2013 - present
CBR400R twin (2013–heden)
GenerationThe modern CBR400R is a comfortable sports twin with fuel injection and usually ABS, designed for road use. It shares its platform with the CB400F and 400X and is not a race-replica successor.
Years
1990 - 1994
CBR400RR NC29 Gull Arm (1990–1994)
GenerationThe NC29 is the best-known CBR400RR, with a Gull Arm swingarm, full fairing and very high-revving four-cylinder engine. An original, correctly set-up example feels light and precise.
Years
1986 - 1989
CBR400R / RR NC23 (1986–1989)
GenerationThe NC23 introduces liquid cooling, an aluminium frame and compact race-replica dimensions. Aero and Tri-Arm versions can be identified by their bodywork and swingarm.
Years
1983 - 1986
CBR400F (1983–1986)
GenerationThe first CBR400F uses an air-cooled four-cylinder engine, steel frame and distinctive half or full fairing. Its construction is more traditional than the later RR models.
About the Honda CBR 400
The Honda CBR 400 is a Japanese 400 cc sports-bike family with several clearly distinguishable generations. The CBR400F began as an air-cooled four-cylinder with a half fairing, before the NC23 and especially the CBR400RR NC29 transformed the concept into a compact, high-revving replica with an aluminium frame and full bodywork. From 2013 Honda reused the CBR400R name for a much more accessible liquid-cooled parallel twin.
Classic four-cylinder versions are valued for precise handling and their rev-hungry engines, but demand frequent gear changes and specialist maintenance. The modern CBR400R provides a more upright position, stronger mid-range, fuel injection and ABS, making it better for daily use. Always confirm the model code and year: a CBR400RR and a recent CBR400R share very little engineering. On imported bikes, pay extra attention to registration details, original parts and stated power output.

What to check before buying
- On NC23/NC29 bikes, inspect the carburettors for contamination, leaks and balanced response from cold.
- Listen for cam-chain and valve-train noise and ask for documented valve-clearance servicing.
- Inspect fairing tabs, subframe, steering stops and engine covers for track or crash damage.
- Test charging voltage and inspect the regulator, alternator connectors and loom for heat or modifications.
- On modern CBR400R models, check brakes, ABS warning light, chain set and fork seals for proper maintenance.
