Years1993–2003
The 499cc carburetted twin is the simple, notably durable nineties CB500. It is identified by its steel frame and conventional naked-bike layout.

Years1971–1977
The air-cooled 498cc inline-four is the classic CB500: a collectible, chrome-trimmed four-cylinder fundamentally different from the later twins.

Honda has used the CB500 name for several middleweights. This page distinguishes the classic CB500 Four, the durable 499cc nineties twin and the modern 471cc parallel twin. In current stock, the generic source label ‘CB 500’ is also used for the CB500F, CB500X and, from 2024, the CB500 Hornet. The generation rows below separate those machines by year and explicit model name, so a naked bike is not presented as a classic Four or an adventure bike.
The modern 471cc twin makes 35 kW, making it a natural A2 choice. The F/Hornet is the low, accessible naked; the X has taller ergonomics, longer suspension and a 19-inch front wheel for commuting and light-adventure use. The older PC26/PC32 is more powerful and is not A2 compliant in standard form. On a used bike, service history, chain and brake care, and a cold start matter more than accessories.
On a 1993–2003 PC26/PC32, check a cold start for starter-clutch rattle and make sure both carburettors are clean and balanced.
On modern 471cc models, check the service record and that valve-clearance work was completed on schedule; a clean cold start and stable idle are good signs.
Inspect chain, sprockets and chain guides for wear; frequent city or training-school use accelerates final-drive wear.
Check fork legs, steering-head bearings and brake callipers for corrosion or sticking parts, especially on bikes stored outdoors.
On a CB500X, inspect spoked wheels, rims and protection parts for signs of a drop or off-road use.
