Generations and editions
Features and handling differ by generation. Use this overview to find the right version.
Years
1977 - 1979
1977–1979 W 2000 Injection
GenerationThe later Injection uses a separate oil reservoir and metering pump instead of premix. The rotary base is the same, but a complete, demonstrably working oil-injection system is decisive when buying.
Years
1974 - 1976
1974–1976 W 2000
GenerationThe early W 2000 combines the 294cc single-rotor engine with premix lubrication. Verify the original fuel/oil arrangement and cooling fan, which distinguish it from the later Injection.
About the Hercules W 2000
The Hercules W 2000 is a rare German classic powered by an air-cooled single-rotor Wankel engine built by Fichtel & Sachs. Hercules launched it in 1974 as one of the first production motorcycles with a rotary engine. Its 294cc chamber volume, six-speed gearbox, chain drive and large cooling fan give the W 2000 a distinctly individual character. Early machines use premix lubrication, while the later Injection version meters oil from a separate reservoir. Always identify the type plate, production period and oiling arrangement before ordering parts.
It is a collector motorcycle for a rider who wants to understand the engineering, rather than a carefree everyday classic. The rotary engine is smooth, but work on the rotor, seals and model-specific Sachs parts needs a specialist; documented history matters more than cosmetic restoration. Choose a complete example with working cooling, the correct carburettor and proven lubrication. A test ride should still show clean hot running, charging and shifting.

What to check before buying
- Check the rotor housing, rotor-tip sealing and compression cold and hot; ask for invoices from a rotary specialist rather than accepting a generic engine-rebuild claim.
- Verify the correct lubrication system: early W 2000s use premix, while an Injection needs a complete reservoir, pump and lines with no leaks or air in the feed.
- Test the cooling fan, air ducting and all Wankel-engine mountings; overheating or missing ducting is not a minor defect on a rare machine.
- Check the Bing carburettor, ignition, charging voltage, six-speed gearbox and wet clutch on a warm ride; long storage commonly causes fuel, contact and clutch faults.
- Check the frame number, Hercules or DKW badging, original exhaust and availability of model-specific parts; incorrect restoration pieces can be expensive to rectify.
