About the Hercules M5
The Hercules M5 is a Mofa from the early Prima family. It differs from simpler M models through its Sachs 505/2B with two-speed hand gearbox. A documented 1970s example has pedal start, chain drive and restricted Mofa configuration; check type plate and engine code because many M5s have been modified.
The M5 is mechanically simple, but a cheap project can hide wear in crank seals, carburettor, clutch and wiring. Original cylinder, exhaust and gearing matter for legal approval. Prefer a complete example that cold-starts, shifts correctly and has tidy 6V electrics over a tuned moped of unknown history.

What to check before buying
- Verify type plate, frame number and Sachs 505/2B engine code; M5 and other Prima M versions are often confused.
- Check compression, crank seals, Bing carburettor and 1:50 premix for cold starting and hot running.
- Test two-speed gearbox, clutch, chain and sprockets under load for slip and non-original gearing.
- Check 6V ignition, charging, lights and loom for corrosion and incorrect conversions.
- Inspect frame, fork, drum brakes, wheels and tank for corrosion, play and crash damage.
