About the Harley Davidson Tour Glide
The Harley-Davidson Tour Glide (FLT) is a classic tourer produced from 1980 to 1995. The Tour Glide introduced a frame-mounted fairing to Harley-Davidson, unlike the handlebar-mounted fairing of the Electra Glide, which reduced vibration transmission and improved handling. The engine is either a 1340 cc Shovelhead (1980-1984) or Evolution (1984-1995) V-twin, also offered as the FLHT Tour Glide Ultra with full luggage. The spacious layout and large touring luggage made it a genuine long-haul tourer.
The Tour Glide appeals to touring riders who prioritise long-distance comfort and have an affinity for classic Harley-Davidson machines. The over-320 kg weight demands experience. Maintenance and parts for the Shovelhead version require specialist knowledge; the Evolution is better documented. Contemporary rivals were the Honda Gold Wing and BMW R100RT. Current used examples are rare, typically sought by collectors and enthusiasts.

What to check before buying
- Check the frame-mounted fairing for hairline cracks and damaged mounting points; repairs are expensive.
- Inspect the engine (Shovelhead or Evolution) for oil seeping at the cylinder head gaskets; a chronic problem on both engine types.
- Check wiring for age-related cracking and heat damage: original 1980s looms are fragile.
- Examine the seat upholstery and saddlebag closures for wear: replacement parts are scarce.
- Check the gearbox for correct operation: the early FLT five-speed had synchronisation issues when shifting cold.
