2005–2006 Multistrada 1000 S DS
EditionThe 1000 S DS shares the regular 1000's 992cc Dual Spark engine, but adds a higher-spec chassis and trim. It is not a different displacement or second engine generation; match it only where S DS/S is explicit.
Years
2003 - 2006
2003–2006 Multistrada 1000 DS
GenerationThe regular Multistrada 1000 DS uses the 992cc air-cooled Dual Spark L-twin in the first tall Multistrada platform from 2003. This row requires no trim term, so an advert without an S designation safely resolves to the standard DS.
About the Ducati Multistrada 1000
The Ducati Multistrada 1000 DS is the first Multistrada generation of 2003–2006: tall, light and distinctive, powered by an air-cooled 992cc Desmodue Dual Spark L-twin. Dual Spark was not a later engine update; it was the foundation of the 1000 DS from launch. It is primarily a fast road all-rounder with long-travel suspension and upright comfort, not a modern off-road adventure bike with large wheels and traction control.
The late 1000 S DS belongs to the same engine family but is a higher-spec chassis trim, and should be identified only by an explicit S designation. On any used example, belts, desmo valves, charging voltage and tank condition matter more than mileage alone. Also look for a consistent service history and non-original wiring or conversion parts.

What to check before buying
- Request proof of timing-belt and desmodromic-valve service; verify both date and mileage with a Ducati specialist.
- Inspect the plastic tank, fuel pump, quick connectors and lines for leakage, distortion or fuel smell, especially after long storage.
- Measure charging voltage and inspect regulator, alternator, battery, earth connections and starter relay for heat, corrosion and difficult starting.
- Inspect fork, rear shock, steering-head and swingarm bearings for leakage or play; an S DS merits extra scrutiny of its higher-spec suspension.
- Check exhaust headers, oil cooler and cylinder heads for heat staining, oil traces and tip-over damage.
