Years
2006 - 2008
2006–2008 Monster S4RS (998)
EditionThe S4RS uses the more powerful 998cc Testastretta with a higher-spec Öhlins/Brembo package. Match it only when S4RS/RS is explicit or 998 engine information can be verified.
Years
2003 - 2006
2003–2006 Monster S4R (996)
GenerationThe first Monster S4R uses the 996cc Desmoquattro, producing 83kW, with the single-sided swingarm. It is the regular S4R generation; without an RS designation, this is the safe assignment.
About the Ducati Monster S4R
The Ducati Monster S4R is the 2003–2006 sporting naked with a liquid-cooled 996cc Desmoquattro, single-sided swingarm and much sharper chassis than the regular air-cooled Monsters. It is not a Testastretta model: that engine belongs to the later S4RS. The distinction matters in an advert or purchase because engine, output and parts are not the same.
The 2006–2008 Monster S4RS then uses the 998cc Testastretta and a higher-spec Öhlins/Brembo package. Both are powerful, maintenance-intensive nakeds for experienced riders. Check complete desmo and belt history, cooling, dry clutch, suspension and original components. An S4R with RS accessories is not automatically an S4RS; always verify engine and model identity.

What to check before buying
- Request proof of timing-belt and desmodromic-valve service; verify date, mileage and the specific engine variant.
- Inspect radiator, hoses, water pump and cylinder heads for coolant traces, and test the cooling fan in city traffic.
- Test the dry clutch for slip, drag and leaking hydraulics; characteristic rattle is normal, clutch slip is not.
- Check Öhlins and Showa suspension, brakes, single-sided swingarm and steering-head bearings for leaks, play and crash damage.
- For an advertised S4RS, verify the 998 Testastretta and model details; paint, stickers or individual Öhlins parts are not proof.
