About the Ducati 888
The Ducati 888 is an Italian superbike produced from 1991 to 1994 as the successor to the 851. It is powered by a water-cooled L-twin of 888 cc with desmodromic valve actuation derived directly from Ducati's championship-winning Superbike race programme. In World Superbike racing the 888 took the title in 1992 with Doug Polen and in 1993 with Raymond Roche. Alongside the standard Strada, Ducati offered the SP and SP2 variants with higher-specification engines and race-derived components. Today the 888 is a rare and sought-after collector's machine.
The 888 is firmly an experienced rider's motorcycle. The aggressive clip-on position with low bars and high pegs is demanding on longer journeys but rewards with exceptional feel through fast corners. Weight is reasonable for its era, though it needs attention at parking speeds. It competes historically with the Honda RC30 and Yamaha OW01. A well-maintained example is increasingly regarded as a sound investment rather than daily transport.

What to check before buying
- Check the cam belts for cracking and age-related brittleness; these are early-1990s bikes and belts age even on stored machines.
- Inspect the desmodromic valve gear for correct clearances; deferred service becomes expensive quickly.
- Examine all wiring looms for corroded connectors and brittle insulation; common on bikes of this age.
- Assess the carburettors (Mikuni or Weber) for correct synchronisation and smooth idle; poor balance shows up as hesitation under acceleration.
- Check the engine and cylinder-head gaskets for oil seepage, especially on low-mileage bikes that have been stored for periods.
