About the Buell S3 Thunderbolt
The Buell S3 Thunderbolt is an air-cooled 1203 cc V-twin sport-tourer produced by Buell from 1997 to 2002 as the successor to the S2. It features a full fairing with integrated windscreen, a slightly extended frame for improved motorway stability, and the same Harley-Davidson Thunderstorm engine block. With 90 hp and 105 Nm of torque, the S3 was a versatile machine for sport riding and long-distance touring.
The Buell S3 suits experienced riders looking for a unique American alternative to European sportbikes. The upright seating position and full fairing make it more comfortable on long journeys than the naked S1. It is not appropriate for beginners given the high torque and weight. Comparable models include the Ducati 900SS and the Honda CBR900RR.

What to check before buying
- Check the Evolution engine for oil leaks at the rocker covers and primary chain housing; a structural issue with Harley-Davidson engine blocks.
- Inspect the Uniplanar engine mounting for hardened rubber isolators; aged mounts transfer more vibration to the bars and footpegs.
- Check the headlight surround and small tail section of the fairing for cracks; the plastic is prone to UV damage after prolonged outdoor storage.
- Note that original Buell brake components are no longer available through BMW/Harley dealers; replacements must be sourced independently.
- Check the gearbox for cold neutral-finding issues; early Buell gearboxes are prone to stiff engagement in first gear when cold.
