About this model

About the Bmw R 90/6

The 1973-1976 BMW R 90/6 is the comfortable 900 cc touring boxer of the /6 series. Its air-cooled 898 cc twin produces 44 kW (60 hp), has a five-speed gearbox, shaft drive and was the first motorcycle fitted with H4 lighting as standard. It is aimed at long distances and torquey, relaxed riding; that distinguishes it from the R 90 S, which has its own sporting engine tune, equipment and profile.

A good R 90/6 is a usable classic, but confirm type, year and original specification before comparing it with an S or later R 100 model. Check servicing, pushrod seals and valve train, Bing carburettors, clutch/five-speed gearbox and shaft. Also test the single front disc, swingarm and 12V charging system. The standard 18-litre tank could be replaced by an optional 22-litre tank, so tank size alone does not identify the version.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Confirm R 90/6 and 1973-1976 years from frame number and type plate; do not confuse it with an R 90 S or a generic “R 90” advert.
  • From cold, inspect the boxer for oil leaks at pushrod seals, heads and crankcase, plus unwanted valve-train or timing noise.
  • Test Bing carburettors, throttle cables and inlet rubbers for synchronisation, stable idle and clean throttle response.
  • Check clutch, five-speed gearbox, shaft and final drive for slip, difficult shifts, play or oil loss.
  • Test the single ATE front disc, forks, swingarm, wheel bearings and 12V charging voltage; inspect wiring and H4 lighting for age or modifications.
