R 51/2 (1950-1951)
GenerationThe 1950-1951 R 51/2 is the short-lived post-war 494 cc OHV boxer with 24 hp, a four-speed gearbox and shaft drive. It is based on the R 51, but identify it as its own transitional model before the R 51/3.
About the Bmw R 51/2
The 1950-1951 BMW R 51/2 was BMW's first large post-war boxer. It developed the pre-war R 51 concept with a 494 cc OHV twin, but is a distinct, short-lived transitional model. Its 24 hp boxer, shaft drive, telescopic fork and rear suspension make it fundamentally different from the single-cylinder R 24/R 25 family. A recognisable R 51/2 feature is the split valve covers held by a clip.
Do not confuse it with the R 51/3 from 1951: always confirm type and frame number, engine configuration and correct details. When buying, pay attention to engine, clutch, four-speed gearbox, shaft, chassis, drum brakes and 6V electrics. On this early post-war boxer, matching numbers, period-correct parts and an evidenced restoration often matter more than cosmetics alone.

What to check before buying
- Confirm R 51/2, 1950-1951 years, frame number and split valve covers; do not confuse it with an R 51, R 51/3 or the single-cylinder R 24/R 25.
- From cold, check the 494 cc OHV boxer for compression, valve-train and timing noise, oil pressure and leaks around heads and crankcase.
- Test clutch, four-speed gearbox, shaft and final drive for shift quality, play, bearing noise and oil loss.
- Inspect telescopic fork, rear suspension, frame and mountings for wear, corrosion, distortion and non-original restoration work.
- Check drum brakes, spoked wheels, tyres and the 6V ignition/charging system for safe operation and correct materials.
