R 1200 S (2006-2008)
GenerationThe R 1200 S is BMW's short, sporting boxer with 1170 cc, Telelever and shaft drive. It is lighter and much more forward-leaning than an RS or RT, intended as a sports-bike alternative with boxer character; inspect sport suspension and brakes on a used machine.
About the Bmw R 1200 S
The BMW R 1200 S is BMW's sport boxer motorcycle, produced from 2006 to 2008. The 1170 cc twin-cylinder boxer delivers 122 hp, at the time the highest power output from a BMW boxer. Dual front disc brakes with radially mounted calipers and supersport ergonomics distinguish the R 1200 S from other R-series models. Telelever front suspension ensures stable high-speed handling. It is the sporting counterpart to the RT in the R 1200 range.
The R 1200 S targets sport-oriented riders who want a BMW boxer with track-day capability. The riding position is low and forward-leaning, comparable to a sportsbike. On the road it is fast and agile but less suited to long touring rides. It competes with the Ducati 1000 S, Honda CBR1000RR and Yamaha YZF-R1 for outright speed. Experience with large sportsbikes is required.

What to check before buying
- Check valve clearances; the higher-revving setup of the S requires shorter service intervals.
- Inspect the Telelever ball bearings for wear; hard riding accelerates wear.
- Check brake caliper and disc condition for wear from sporting use.
- Inspect the shaft drive for oil leaks, especially on high-mileage examples.
- Ask about accident history; sports bikes are ridden harder and carry higher risk of crash damage.
