The C1 125 is BMW's covered 125 cc urban scooter with a safety cage, belt and a seat that offers weather protection. It is a very different experience from a conventional scooter; inspect the roof structure, belt, brakes and latches carefully.
The BMW C1 is a unique enclosed scooter produced by BMW Motorrad between 2000 and 2002. Its single-cylinder four-stroke engine displaces 125 cc (base model) or 177 cc (C1 200), producing 15 hp and 19 hp respectively. The most distinctive feature is the aluminium safety frame with an overhead arch and triangulated roll cage, allowing BMW to claim that helmet use was unnecessary in certain jurisdictions. The rider is restrained by a seatbelt and surrounded by a protective cell designed to absorb energy in a crash. Production ended in 2002.
The C1 targets commuter riders who want rain protection and urban comfort combined with scooter agility. At around 195 kg it is less agile than a conventional 125cc scooter. In some countries (notably Germany and the UK) the C1 could be ridden without a helmet, in the Netherlands this was not permitted. Today the C1 is a rare collector's item.
