1954–1956 MB 201
GenerationThe MB 201 is the 199 cc single-cylinder two-stroke in the MB range, with around 10.5 hp and four gears. It shares many cycle components with other MB models, but it is specifically not an MB 200, which has a 195 cc twin-cylinder engine.
About the Adler MB 201
The Adler MB 201 is a distinct 1954–1956 MB model, not an alternative name for the MB 200. The MB 201 has an air-cooled 199 cc single-cylinder two-stroke with around 10.5 hp, whereas the MB 200 is a 195 cc twin. Both use the modular MB cycle parts, but their engines, performance and identification are materially different.
The MB 201 combines a Bing carburettor, four gears, wet multi-plate clutch and chain drive with the MB range’s characteristic leading-link front fork. It is a classic lightweight tourer, not a sporting twin. When buying, check the model designation, engine and frame numbers, and cylinder configuration; “Adler 200” in an advert is too vague. Preserve original parts where possible and focus a test ride on a smooth crankshaft, clean shifting, correct ignition and brake operation.

What to check before buying
- Check compression, crankshaft noise and exhaust smoke from the single-cylinder two-stroke; ask about premix lubrication and rebuild history.
- Inspect the Bing carburettor, fuel tap and tank for dirt, leaks and reliable cold starting.
- Check the four-speed gearbox, wet multi-plate clutch and chain drive for slip, noise and full engagement of every gear.
- Check the 6V system, battery, charging voltage and earth points for reliable lighting and ignition.
- Inspect the leading-link fork, rear suspension and drum brakes for play, leaks, wear and even operation.
