1952–1953 M 250
GenerationThe original M 250 is the 16 hp 247 cc parallel-twin two-stroke of 1952–1953, with four gears and drum brakes. It predates the MB 250 and its revised cycle parts; the later 18 hp Sprinter does not belong to this generation either.
About the Adler M 250
The Adler M 250 is the original 250 cc version of the early post-war M range, built in 1952–1953. It has an air-cooled 247 cc parallel-twin two-stroke with carburettor, four gears, wet multi-plate clutch and chain drive. At 16 hp it was the strongest M model of its time. Its engine has two cylinders, so it must not be confused with the single-cylinder M 150 or M 2011.
The M 250 preceded the MB 250. The later MB range gained, among other changes, a taller reinforced frame and different front fork; the Sprinter is a later, more powerful 18 hp version again. An advert that merely says “Adler 250” is therefore insufficient identification. Verify year, engine and frame numbers and the original specification before ordering parts. On a classic two-stroke, crankshaft condition, ignition, carburation, gearbox and brakes matter more than a glossy restoration alone.

What to check before buying
- Check the crankshaft, compression and exhaust smoke from both cylinders; ask about premix oil used and records of any rebuild.
- Inspect the carburettor, fuel tap, tank and lines for contamination, leaks and even response from both cylinders.
- Check the four-speed gearbox, wet multi-plate clutch and enclosed chain drive under load for slip, noise and difficult shifts.
- Check the 6V electrical system, battery, charging voltage and wiring; poor earth connections are a common source of faults on old motorcycles.
- Inspect the 180 mm drum brakes, cables and hubs for wear and even operation; keep the test ride realistic for period braking performance.
