Years
2020 - present
2020-current revised R1M
GenerationThe later R1M retains the 998cc crossplane basis but uses the revised modern electronics and emissions configuration. A 2025 example should be judged on service, factory warranty and genuine R1M equipment, not a standalone sport silencer.
Years
2015 - 2019
2015-2019 first R1M
GenerationThe first modern R1M combines the 998cc crossplane engine with electronic Öhlins suspension, IMU rider aids and carbon bodywork. A 2015 motorcycle with accessories remains this factory evolution; verify R1M specification through VIN, suspension and original documentation.
About the Yamaha YZF R1 M
The Yamaha YZF-R1M is the premium track-focused R1 with a 998cc crossplane inline four, six-speed gearbox, IMU electronics and Öhlins suspension. It differs from the regular R1 through race-oriented components, carbon bodywork and broader adjustment range; an Akrapovič silencer or tail tidy does not automatically make a regular R1 an R1M.
It is a machine for experienced riders who will genuinely use and set up the chassis and electronics on road or track. Buy on condition and documentation: check service history, software or electronics work, damage to bodywork and frame, and the state of tyres, brakes and suspension. Output is far beyond A2 level, and aftermarket tuning deserves extra scrutiny as it can affect rideability, emissions and reliability.

What to check before buying
- Inspect frame, steering stops, subframe, fork legs and engine covers for track or slide damage.
- Request invoices for oil, plugs, coolant, valve clearances and Öhlins suspension servicing; setup is not a substitute for maintenance.
- Test quickshifter, clutch, every gear and electronic rider aids without warning messages.
- Inspect discs, calipers, brake fluid and tyres for heat or track use.
- Check ECU, exhaust and intake changes for documentation and correct mapping, not merely branded parts.
