About this model

About the Yamaha YZF 450

The Yamaha YZ450F is a 449 cc four-stroke motocross machine released annually in updated form. Yamaha introduced the YZ450F in 2003 as the successor to the YZ426F, featuring a more compact engine, repositioned mass centralisation, and improved weight distribution. The bike is derived directly from Yamaha's factory racing programme and has featured consistently at the front of MXGP and AMA 450 championships.

The YZ450F targets experienced and competitive motocross riders who demand maximum performance on clay and sand tracks. It is not suitable for beginners: power delivery is aggressive and rewards skilled technique. The machine is also popular in Supercross and as a base for enduro conversions. It competes directly with the Honda CRF450R, KTM 450 SX-F, and Kawasaki KX450.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Check the piston and wrist pin for wear; at competitive use a piston rebuild is due around 40–50 engine hours.
  • Inspect valve clearances and check the valve seats for pitting; running tight clearances can cause valve damage.
  • Check fork legs and rear shock for fluid leaks and correct oil level; race suspension set-up is harsh for trail or forest use.
  • Inspect the chain and sprockets for wear; hard riding wears both quickly, and budget replacements have short service lives.
  • Check the radiator guard and coolant hoses for damage; crash impacts or stone strikes can cause coolant leaks.
