About the Yamaha YZ 80
The Yamaha YZ80 is a youth motocross machine with a 79cc two-stroke single, built from 1974 to 2001 before the YZ85 succeeded it. It is off-road circuit equipment, with no road gear or YSR50 road role. Early air-cooled and later liquid-cooled models need different parts and maintenance checks.
Buy a YZ80 on condition and history rather than cosmetics. Check compression, crankshaft, cylinder, premix, air-filter path and gearbox. Inspect frame, linkage bearings, fork, wheels and brakes for hard off-road use. A complete example with the correct model code matters because details vary by year.

What to check before buying
- Measure compression and listen for crankshaft or piston noise; a small motocross two-stroke can have many hours.
- Check premix, carburettor, intake rubber and air filter for sand ingestion or incorrect setup.
- Inspect fork seals, shock, linkage bearings and wheel bearings for play or leaks.
- Inspect frame, subframe, footrests and skid area for cracks or poorly repaired motocross damage.
- Verify year and model code; early air-cooled YZ80s are not later liquid-cooled machines.
