The Yamaha XS 400 was an accessible middleweight twin in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its air-cooled 399 cc parallel twin, six-speed gearbox and straightforward twin-shock chassis make it light, understandable and usable as a classic. Standard, SE, Special and Heritage versions appeared depending on market and year, with differences in tank, seat, wheels and handlebars.
Many XS400s have since been converted into café racers, scramblers, trackers, choppers or hardtails. Inspect the frame, wiring, brakes and registration identity particularly carefully. Mechanically, carburettors, intake rubbers, valve clearances, cam chain and charging system need attention. Tank and exhaust corrosion also matter, while original components are becoming scarce.
