About the Yamaha XS 250
The Yamaha XS250 is an air-cooled 248cc parallel twin from Yamaha's light late-1970s XS family. It does not automatically share specifications with the XS360: displacement, tuning and parts must be checked for each XS250. Its straightforward twin and classic steel chassis suit relaxed classic use rather than modern performance.
Buy on mechanical fundamentals. Check carburettors, intake rubbers, valve clearance, cam chain and charging voltage. Also inspect tank, exhaust and frame for corrosion, and brakes, fork and wheel bearings for play. A complete original-looking XS250 is generally a better base than a cosmetic project with unknown engine history.

What to check before buying
- Check carburettors and intake rubbers for contamination, leaks and uneven cold starting.
- Listen for cam-chain and valvetrain noise and ask about valve-clearance service.
- Test charging voltage and inspect connectors, fuses and regulator for age-related faults.
- Inspect tank, exhaust and frame for corrosion, and check brakes and fork for seizure or leaks.
- Verify frame number and exact XS250 version; do not substitute XS360 specifications.
