About this model

About the Yamaha WR 426

The Yamaha WR426F is a four-stroke enduro motorcycle with a 426cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder DOHC engine, produced in 2001 and 2002. Yamaha introduced the WR426 as the successor to the WR400F, featuring a larger bore, improved cooling system and optimised intake ports. The engine produces over 50 hp and combines the chassis of the Yamaha YZ motocrosser with an extended electrical system for road use (in some markets).

The WR426F targets enduro riders and off-road enthusiasts seeking a reliable, powerful machine for technical terrain and cross-country riding. It is demanding but rewarding for experienced riders who can manage the power. It competes with the KTM 400 EXC and Honda XR400R. The slim, lightweight build makes it manoeuvrable in tight wooded terrain. Many examples have been road-registered in countries with lenient homologation rules.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Check valve clearances and cam lobes; the 20-hour service interval is frequently skipped during off-road use.
  • Inspect the water pump and radiator for leaks and dents from off-road impacts.
  • Test thermal stability during extended low-speed riding; the WR426 overheats quickly in slow technical terrain.
  • Examine chain, sprockets and chain guide condition; off-road use causes rapid wear and replacement is costly.
  • Verify road-legal status; the WR426 is not homologated for road use as standard and requires modifications.
