The original SR 400 uses a carburettor and classic single-cylinder engineering. Check starting, carburation and the condition of original components.
The Yamaha SR 400 is a long-running air-cooled 399cc single that deliberately retains classic engineering and styling. It is calm, tractable at low revs and suits riders who value simplicity, manageable weight and a natural riding position over outright speed. Earlier examples use carburettors; later versions gained injection but remain recognisable by the kickstarter and minimalist construction.
Buy an SR 400 on maintenance, originality and starting behaviour. With a cold engine, check the kickstarting procedure, valve noise, oil leaks and any frame or exhaust corrosion. Also assess modifications: scrambler or café-racer conversions can be well executed, but make wiring, legal compliance and original parts harder to evaluate. A tidy standard motorcycle is usually the safest choice.
