About the Yamaha RD 125
The Yamaha RD 125 is a light sporting two-stroke from the 1970s. With its 124cc air-cooled single, low weight and simple chassis, it was intended as an approachable step toward the larger RD models. The RD 125 looks classic, but its direct two-stroke character makes it livelier than many four-stroke 125s of the same era.
An RD 125 is primarily an enthusiast motorcycle for short rides and classic events. Its mechanics are straightforward, but a good example needs attention to fuel, oil supply, ignition and corrosion prevention. Buy on mechanical condition and completeness: the correct exhaust, airbox and carburettor matter to set-up. A test ride should give clean throttle response without detonation, excessive smoke beyond a normal two-stroke start, or unusual crank and cylinder noises.

What to check before buying
- Check crank bearings, piston and cylinder for rattle, poor compression and documented rebuild history.
- Inspect oil injection or premix configuration, hoses and pump setting; inadequate lubrication quickly causes major damage.
- Check carburettor, airbox and original exhaust for a compatible set-up; altered parts strongly affect running.
- Test ignition, charging voltage and lighting, and inspect loom/connectors for brittleness or corrosion.
- Inspect tank, frame, wire wheels and exhaust for rust, particularly beneath paint and on the underside.
